Alpha Epsilon Delta is the National Health Preprofessional Honor Society dedicated to encouraging and recognizing excellence among undergraduate students preparing for careers in the health professions.
The story of AEΔ began at the University of Alabama in 1926, when premedical student Sidney A. Mitchell proposed the creation of an honorary organization for students pursuing medicine. Working alongside fellow students and Dr. Jack Montgomery, professor of organic chemistry and premedical advisor, the group held its first formal organizational meeting on April 28, 1926.
During the 1926–1927 academic year, the organization developed its constitution, bylaws, traditions, and activities. AEΔ held its first initiation on March 4, 1927, welcoming eight students and one faculty member.
What began as a small group of premedical students soon expanded beyond Alabama. The University of South Carolina became the first institution outside the University of Alabama to establish a chapter in 1928, followed by additional chapters at Samford University, The University of Texas, and Baylor University.
Today, Alpha Epsilon Delta has grown into a national community of students committed to scholarship, leadership, service, and the health professions. AEΔ welcomes students pursuing medicine, dentistry, physician assistant studies, optometry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, occupational therapy, and other advanced health professions.
